Your nickname is the first thing anyone in a chat room knows about you, and for a while it is the only thing. It decides who writes to you, how you are remembered, and how easily a stranger could connect your chat identity to your real one.
What a good nickname does
- It is easy to read and type. People will have to write it to greet you or find you again.
- It is easy to remember. One or two short words stay in the mind; a string of numbers does not.
- It says a little about your character, or at least nothing you would not want said.
- It reveals nothing that identifies you. No surname, no birth year, no phone digits.
What to avoid
Anything traceable
"Sara_Karimi_1994" contains a full name and a year of birth. Add the city you mention in conversation and you have told a stranger enough to find you. The same goes for reusing your Instagram or Telegram handle: one search links the accounts, with all the photos and friends attached. Our article on protecting your privacy explains how these small pieces add up.
Names that attract the wrong attention
A provocative or flirtatious nickname brings a certain kind of private message, and a lot of it. If that is not the conversation you came for, choose something neutral. Offensive, sexual, political or insulting names are also against the rules of most chat rooms, including this one, and are simply removed.
Names that look like staff
"Admin", "Moderator", "Support" and their variations are not allowed for good reason: they are the standard disguise of people who try to trick others into giving up passwords. Do not use them, and be wary of anyone who does.
Names nobody can type
Decorative characters, ten underscores, or mixed alphabets look striking in the user list and are impossible to write. If people cannot type your name, they will talk to someone else. Long random numbers have the same problem; if your first choice is taken, a short meaningful addition is better than "48291".
Someone else's name
Using the name of a real person, a celebrity or another member of the room causes confusion at best and counts as impersonation at worst.
Where good nicknames come from
If nothing comes to mind, try one of these sources. They tend to produce names that feel personal without being private.
- Nature. In Persian many of the loveliest words are short: باران (bârân, rain), نسیم (nasim, breeze), دریا (daryâ, sea), مهتاب (mahtâb, moonlight).
- A quality or mood. Calm, Night Owl, آرام (ârâm, calm), رها (rahâ, free).
- An interest. A musical instrument, a sport, a favourite dish, a book character old enough to belong to everyone.
- A place that is not your address. A mountain, a river, a city you love but do not live in.
- Two words together. An adjective and a noun, such as "Quiet River" or "Blue Tea", is almost always free and easy to remember.
Persian script or Latin letters?
Both work in a Persian chat room. A name in Persian script looks natural to native speakers, but learners and people on foreign keyboards may not be able to type it. A name in Latin letters is typed by everyone, and if it is a Persian word written in Finglish it keeps its flavour. Whichever you choose, pick a spelling and keep it.
Check it before you keep it
- Say it aloud. Does it sound like a name, or like a password?
- Search for it. If the first results are your own social media, choose another.
- Read it as a stranger would, in both languages if you use two. Some innocent words mean something else in another language.
- Imagine using it in a year. Jokes about this week's news age quickly.
Guest name or registered name
As a guest you can enter with any name that is free at that moment, which is fine for a first look. If you come back regularly, people will start to recognise you, and someone else could enter with your name when you are away. Registering a free member account reserves the name and protects it with your password, so that the person others think they are talking to is really you. Our guide to guest and member accounts explains the difference.
A simple test: if a friend saw your nickname they would smile, and if a stranger saw it they would learn nothing. That is a good nickname.
