Chat Room Etiquette: 12 Habits of People Everyone Likes Talking To

By the Asal Chat team · · 3 min read

In every chat room there are a few people whose arrival makes the conversation better. They are not the funniest or the fastest typists. They simply follow a handful of unwritten rules. Here are twelve of them, written down.

1. Say hello when you arrive

A short greeting to the room, not to one person, is enough. In a Persian room a simple سلام به همه (salâm be hame, "hello everyone") does the job. Then give people a moment: nobody is obliged to answer within three seconds.

2. Read before you write

Spend a minute following the conversation that is already going on. Walking into a discussion about football and announcing an unrelated question is the online version of interrupting.

3. Do not shout

CAPITAL LETTERS read as shouting, and a line of twenty emoji or the same message pasted five times pushes everyone else's words off the screen. If nobody answered, the room was busy. Wait and try once more, or rephrase.

4. Keep private things private

A public room is not the place for a long two-person exchange, and it is certainly not the place to continue an argument. If a conversation has narrowed to you and one other person, move it to a private chat.

5. Ask before you open a private chat

Many people, women especially, receive a flood of private messages the moment they enter. A line in the public room such as "may I message you?" is polite, and it is far more likely to get an answer than an unannounced "hi" from a stranger.

6. Take no for an answer

If someone does not reply, replies briefly, or says they are not interested, that is the end of it. Asking again turns an ordinary moment into harassment. Nobody owes anyone a conversation.

7. Leave the personal questions for later

"Where exactly do you live?", "Are you married?", "Send a photo" are not openers. Start with what the person has chosen to share: what they said in the room, their interests, the music they mentioned. Our guide on starting a conversation has better first lines.

8. Disagree with the idea, not the person

You can think an opinion is wrong without deciding the person holding it is stupid. "I see it differently, because…" keeps a discussion going. An insult ends it, and usually gets the moderator's attention as well. Topics that reliably turn rooms sour, politics and religion above all, are restricted in many chat rooms for exactly this reason.

9. Respect the language of the room

If the room is talking in Persian, write in Persian or Finglish. If someone is clearly a learner, slow down, avoid heavy slang, and do not mock mistakes. Everyone in a diaspora community has been the person with the accent at some point.

10. Do not advertise

Links to other websites, channels and chat rooms, invitations to "follow my page", and repeated promotional messages are spam, whatever the intention. They are also the quickest route to being muted.

11. Treat moderators as people doing a job

Moderators see things you do not: reports, earlier warnings, messages that were removed. If you disagree with a decision, say so through the proper channel, such as a report or contact form, not in a public protest that derails the room for everyone.

12. Say goodbye

If you have been part of a conversation, a quick farewell before leaving is a small courtesy that people remember. In Persian, شب بخیر (shab bekheyr, "good night") or فعلاً (fe'lan, "bye for now") is all it takes.

Why these small things matter

A chat room has no walls, no door and no host standing at the entrance. The only thing that makes it a pleasant place is the behaviour of the people in it at that moment. One person who greets newcomers and answers questions changes the mood of the whole room, and that person is usually the one others are glad to see online.

None of this requires being formal. Humour, teasing among friends and lively argument are what make a room worth visiting. The twelve habits above simply make sure that everyone is still enjoying it.
